Compression Questions

What are compression socks and stockings? What do they do?

Compression socks and stockings are designed to prevent and aid in the treatment of venous disorders such as edema, DVT, varicose veins, ulcers and swelling.

Do I need compression?

Wearing compression helps to improve blood flow and prevent swelling during prolonged periods of sitting and standing. Compression can also be applied to reduce the risk of DVT, varicose and spider veins. You doctor may also prescribe compression garments to aid in the treatment of an edema or to aid in recovery. Please consult your medical professional before beginning compression treatment.

How much compression should I wear?

You can learn more about our recommended compression levels here.

However, if your medical professional prescribed a specific level of compression, follow their guidance. While compression is generally safe, you should always follow your physician’s advice to avoid complications.

What is mmHg?

MmHg stands for millimeters of mercury, which is a metric unit of pressure.

What is "graduated" compression?

Graduated compression refers to the variation of compression levels applied throughout a compression garment. Graduated compression stockings start with a higher level of compression lower in the garment near the feet and gradually increase as you move up the legs. This graduation in pressure directs blood up the leg, increasing flow.

What conditions can benefit from compression socks and stockings?

In combination with therapeutic treatment, compression can help treat many venous insufficiencies such as varicose veins, spider veins, deep vein thrombotic and post-thrombotic syndrome. Additionally, compression can be used in the treatment of lymphedema and lipedema.

Do I need a prescription to order compression socks or stockings?

You do not need a prescription for our compression stockings. As with all treatments, there are risks involved in the use of compression products. We always suggest that you consult with your medical professional before using any VENOSAN® compression products.

Who SHOULDN'T wear compression socks or stockings?

Individuals with certain medical conditions are not advised to wear compression products. Individuals with severe, uncontrolled congestive heart failure and advanced arterial disease should not wear compression unless advised to by their medical professional. Conditions such as vein disease, skin infections, diabetes or neuropathy can cause complications. We always recommend discussing compression with your medical professional before beginning use of any VENOSAN products.

Product Questions

Do compression socks come in pairs?

Most of our socks are sold in pairs. Any stocking not sold as a pair is clearly labeled in the product description.

Knee highs, thigh highs or pantyhose - what's best for me?

Each individual’s compression needs are unique.

Your compression garment needs to cover the area of the leg where the problem exists. If compression is only required in the lower leg, a knee high may suffice. However, for full leg compression, a knee high or pantyhose might be required.

If you are unsure of what style of garment will best fit your compression needs, we suggest that you check with your medical professional.

What is the difference between compression stockings and support socks?

While the terms “compression stockings” and “support socks” are often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between gradated compression stockings and support socks.

Support socks apply resistance to the leg, reducing swelling and increase blood flow.

Gradated compression stockings apply varying levels of compression to direct blood flow up the leg.

Should I wear closed toe or open toe stockings?

There is no difference in the level of compression provided by open or closed toe stockings. Unless instructed otherwise by your medical professional, feel free to choose whichever type best fits your lifestyle and you find most comfortable.

Do sheer stockings provide the same level of compression?

VENOSAN sheer stockings provide the same mmHg of compression, while providing a sleeker, sheer look.

How many stockings or pairs of socks should I buy?

VENOSAN socks and stockings should be washed between uses. Many customers like to have 2-4 pairs of compression garments. If you travel for extended lengths of time or have infrequent access to laundering facilities, we suggest purchasing additional pairs of socks or stockings.

Are VENOSAN stockings a medical product?

VENOSAN compression garments are Class I medical devices. While our garments are available over the counter, we always suggest consulting your medical professional before starting, changing or terminating any treatments.

When should I wear my compression garments?

You can wear your VENOSAN compression everyday!

You should always wash your stockings after every use. This will insure your garments last as long as possible and maintain the designed level of compression.

Can I wear my compression stockings to bed?

In general, you should only wear your compression socks or stockings during the day and remove them before going to bed. While there are exceptions to this rule, VENOSAN USA does not advise wearing compression at night unless instructed to do so by your medical professional.

Care & Use

How often should I replace my stockings?

We suggest replacing your compression garments every 6 months or after 180 uses.

How can I stop my stockings from rolling down?

The primary cause of stockings rolling or shifting is improper fit. Please visit our measuring guide here to ensure you have the proper fit.

Stockings that are too large might not have the proper compression to hold the garment, while stockings that are too small may be pulled down by the compression.

If the issue persist we suggest switching to a compression garment with a silicon band. The added grip of the silicon will provide a comfortable fit that will keep it in place.

How do I wash my compression garments?

The VENOSAN garment care guide can be found here.

How frequently should I wash my compression garments?

All VENOSAN compression garments should be washed after every application.

Will my compression garments shrink?

We suggest following the care instructions here to minimise the risk of shrinking and to preserve the garment’s compression.

Sizing

What size socks or stockings should I buy?

Proper fit is critical to effective compression. Because of this we have assembled a complete sizing guide here to assist you in finding the perfect fit! Additionally, while it is not required, your medical professional can also provide sizing assistance.

What if I am between sizes?

When measuring, your calf measurement is critical. If you are between sizes we suggest sizing down. If the compression is uncomfortable or painful you will need to size up.

How and where should I measure?

Finding the perfect fit is critical to effective compression. You can find our complete measure and fit guide here.

Are there different sizes for men and women?

VENOSAN sizing is unisex. However, some products are designed with men or women in mind. Products like our maternity compression are specifically designed for expectant mothers.

For a complete size guide, please visit our measurement and sizing page here.

Do I need my doctor to take my measurements?

No. While your doctor may be able to provide you with measurements, you can also measure at home using the steps detailed here.

Why are accurate measurements so important?

Graduated compression requires a fit that tightly follows the shape of your leg. This allows for the compression to properly increase circulation as well as be comfortable all day.

If you are having issues finding the perfect size check out our sizing guide here or send us a message.

How should my stockings feel when I'm wearing them?

Your VENOSAN stockings should feel supportive and tight. However, the compression should not be painful or uncomfortable.

If your compression is uncomfortable or painful there are a few thing to check:

1. Do you have the proper size garment? You can check our measurement and sizing guide here.
2. Do you have the proper level of compression?
3. Do you have the correct style of garment for you needs?

If you are still struggling with your compression level please contact us.
