Understanding Arterial vs. Venous Insufficiency

Vascular health plays a vital role in overall well-being, yet two commonly misunderstood conditions — arterial insufficiency and venous insufficiency — affect circulation in very different ways. Understanding their differences is crucial for proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

At Venosan, we’re dedicated to educating our customers about vascular health and providing high-quality compression stockings that promote comfort, mobility, and long-term circulatory wellness.

What Is Arterial Insufficiency?

Arterial insufficiency occurs when arteries — the blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body — become narrowed or blocked. This restriction limits oxygen delivery, most often affecting the legs and feet.

The most common causes include:

Atherosclerosis: The buildup of plaque inside the arteries.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): A condition that narrows blood flow to the limbs.

Common Symptoms

Pain or cramping in the legs during activity (claudication), which improves with rest.

Untreated arterial insufficiency can lead to serious complications such as infection, tissue loss, or gangrene, so early diagnosis and medical intervention are key.

What Is Venous Insufficiency?

Venous insufficiency, on the other hand, affects the veins — the vessels responsible for carrying blood back to the heart. When the vein valves are weakened or damaged, blood can pool in the legs instead of circulating upward properly.

This condition is commonly associated with:

Varicose veins: Enlarged veins caused by valve failure.

They are also recommended by healthcare professionals as a non-invasive, highly effective way to manage venous insufficiency symptoms.

While compression therapy is generally reserved for venous conditions, maintaining good circulation through movement, hydration, and regular checkups supports both arterial and venous health.

Compression Levels Explained: 15–20 mmHg vs. 20–30 mmHg vs. 30–40 mmHg

If you’ve ever shopped for compression stockings, you’ve probably noticed terms like “15–20 mmHg” or “20–30 mmHg” on the packaging. These numbers can be confusing at first—but they’re actually the key to understanding how compression therapy works and which product is right for you.

The abbreviation “mmHg” stands for millimeters of mercury, a unit used to measure pressure. The higher the number, the stronger the compression. Each level is designed for a specific purpose—ranging from daily comfort and prevention to medical recovery and chronic conditions.

What 15–20 mmHg Compression Means

This is the most common and gentle level of graduated compression. It’s designed for everyday wear and prevention rather than treatment. Stockings with 15–20 mmHg compression help support circulation and reduce mild swelling or fatigue.

They’re ideal for people who spend long hours sitting or standing, travelers on long flights, or anyone looking to improve leg comfort at the end of the day. Many find this level perfect for daily use since it provides light support without feeling restrictive.

Typical benefits include:

Relief from tired, achy legs

Reduction of mild swelling

Prevention of early varicose veins

Support during travel or pregnancy

What 20–30 mmHg Compression Means

This level offers moderate, medical-grade compression. It’s often prescribed for those with noticeable vein issues or moderate swelling. The 20–30 mmHg range improves venous return—helping blood move upward from the legs toward the heart—and reduces the feeling of heaviness or pain.

It’s the most popular “therapeutic” range because it balances strength and comfort, making it suitable for everyday wear among people with more active or demanding circulation needs.

Typical uses include:

Varicose veins and spider veins

Post-surgery recovery or injury swelling

Moderate edema or fluid retention

Support for standing professions (nurses, teachers, factory workers)

What 30–40 mmHg Compression Means

This is a high level of medical compression typically used for advanced venous insufficiency or chronic conditions. It’s prescribed for individuals experiencing severe swelling, lymphedema, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Because this range delivers strong, targeted pressure, it should generally be worn under medical supervision. Venosan’s high-compression garments are precisely calibrated to ensure comfort and safety while delivering the clinical benefits needed for advanced therapy.

Typical uses include:

Severe varicose veins

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)

Post-sclerotherapy treatment

Choosing the Right Compression for You

Your ideal compression level depends on your symptoms, health history, and goals. If you’re new to compression wear, start with a lighter level (15–20 mmHg) and see how your legs respond. For medical use or moderate to severe swelling, higher compression levels may be recommended by your healthcare provider.

Remember that all Venosan compression stockings are lab-tested for compression accuracy, durability, and comfort. Whether you need light support for everyday comfort or high compression for medical-grade relief, Venosan ensures you’re getting exactly what your legs need.

What Does Graduated Compression Really Mean?

Graduated compression means the pressure in your stocking or sock is strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. This design helps your veins push blood back toward the heart, reducing swelling, fatigue, and the risk of varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Unlike standard “tight” socks, true graduated compression is measured and controlled—each millimeter of mercury (mmHg) is tested to ensure accurate support and safe performance.

The Science Behind Graduated Compression
Graduated compression helps your veins and muscles work together more efficiently. When veins are supported correctly, circulation improves and discomfort fades. The benefits include improved blood flow and oxygen delivery, reduced swelling in the feet, ankles, and calves, less leg fatigue during long days, faster recovery after surgery or pregnancy, and a lower risk of DVT during travel or extended sitting.

Even healthy legs benefit from consistent support, making graduated compression a smart choice for anyone who spends long hours on their feet or seated.

Why It Matters for Your Health
Everyday activities—standing, walking, or even sitting—put pressure on your veins. Over time, this can lead to swelling, heaviness, or visible veins. Graduated compression offsets that strain by supporting circulation, preventing pooling, and keeping legs feeling lighter and more energized.

When the White House confirmed that President Trump has chronic venous insufficiency (CVI—it shoved a once-niche medical term into prime-time headlines. Search interest for phrases like “leg swelling,” “venous disease,” and “compression socks” have surged over the past week as Americans ask what the condition is, who gets it, and how it’s treated. CBS NewsLos Angeles Times

What exactly is CVI?

Healthy leg veins push blood back to the heart against gravity with help from tiny one-way valves and the squeezing action of calf muscles. In CVI those valves become damaged or weak, so blood pools in the lower legs, raising venous pressure—a process doctors call venous hypertension. The result can be edema (swelling), aching, heaviness, skin discoloration, varicose veins, and, in advanced cases, venous ulcers. uow.edu.au

Why the sudden spotlight matters

While CVI is common—affecting up to 40 percent of adults over 50—most people don’t recognize early signs until swelling or varicose veins appear. A high-profile case like Trump’s (he is reportedly at a moderate stage but otherwise stable) brings instant awareness, pushing millions to research their own symptoms or a parent’s. That spike in curiosity is an opportunity to educate the public on preventative measures and evidence-based care. ReutersABC News

Risk factors and warning signs

Age & genetics: Valve wear-and-tear accumulates with age; family history magnifies risk.

Prolonged standing or sitting: Occupations such as retail, nursing, and driving reduce calf-pump action.

Pregnancy & hormones: Increased blood volume and progesterone weaken vein walls.

Obesity & inactivity: Extra abdominal pressure and poor muscle tone slow venous return.
Early clues include ankle swelling that worsens by evening, itching or tingling in the calves, or veins that look twisted or bulging. Left unchecked, CVI can progress to skin thickening (lipodermatosclerosis) and open sores that are slow to heal. uow.edu.au

First-line treatments (and why compression matters)

Clinical guidelines still start with three conservative pillars:

Graduated compression stockings (15–40 mmHg): External pressure narrows vein diameter, speeds up flow, and prevents reflux. Medical-grade stockings remain the gold standard; studies link consistent wear to reduced swelling, pain, and ulcer recurrence. AP NewsReuters

Lifestyle tweaks: Daily walks, calf-raises, leg elevation above heart level, and weight control all cut venous pressure. PBS

Skin care: Gentle cleansing and moisturizers avoid breakdown in vulnerable tissue.

If symptoms persist, vascular specialists may recommend endovenous ablation, sclerotherapy, or phlebectomy—minimally invasive procedures that close or remove faulty veins. UC Davis Health

Key takeaways for readers

CVI is common, progressive, and treatable when caught early.

Consistent use of properly fitted compression hosiery can arrest or even reverse many symptoms.

Sudden leg swelling deserves medical evaluation to rule out clots or heart-related causes.

High-profile disclosures—like President Trump’s—should be a reminder to prioritize vein health rather than a cause for panic.

Compression therapy refers to applying an elastic sock or stocking to the limbs (most often the legs) to exert controlled pressure in order to improve blood circulation. This pressure helps reduce swelling, pain and the risk of venous disease. Many individuals can benefit from Medical Compression Stockings (MCS), not just the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions. Pregnant women, frequent travelers, office workers, those who work on their feet all day, and anyone who lives a more sedentary lifestyle are some examples of people who may benefit from medical compression.

With all the different types of products on the market, it may be a bit overwhelming to know which one to choose. Compared to other types of compression out there, Medical Compression Stockings meet rigorous standards and quality controls to ensure their medical benefits and durability over time. In order to achieve this, Medical Compression Stockings have a built in pressure gradient that helps counter the effects of gravity, helping circulate blood from the legs back to the heart. The stockings are also sewn with high quality yarns. The end result is a medical grade stocking that helps control leg, ankle and foot swelling and pain, which often results from problems with leg veins and lymphatic vessels.

A double covered design prevents bare elastic from touching the skin. Each elastic inlay yarn is wrapped twice with the fine yarns to cover it. This assists in easier donning, allowing the product to glide on and off. Double covered inlay yarns also provide increased comfort and durability, which lead to longer satisfaction and more consistent use.

Depending on the type of yarns used to knit MCS, these garments can also provide other benefits. Various special yarns provide odor control, wick moisture, prevent bacterial growth in the garment, provide hypoallergenic properties, and/or a luxurious feel. A variety of colors, textures and styles make MCS easy to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe.

Precautions and Contraindications are listed to indicate under which circumstances MCS should not be used or used only under the close supervision and guidance of a medical professional.

In order to reap the benefits of MCS, it is important to choose a brand manufactured with strict quality controls to guarantee dosage over the course of the day, over months of use and with repeated washings.
Containment refers to how well a medical compression garment is able to keep edema (swelling) from increasing while wearing the product. The underlying cause of the swelling and its severity will affect the level of containment a person needs. It is important to choose a product that can provide higher containment if the edema is more intense. In general, sheer products provide the least amount of containment. Natural fibers, such as cotton, provide higher containment in MCS.

When it comes to choosing the correct size of MCS, it’s important to measure each component of the legs and feet correctly. Proper fit is critical to effective compression and consistent comfort throughout the day. Depending on what product you go with, there are different measurements to take into consideration. In order to ensure this longevity, make sure you wear suitable shoes that will not damage the sheer knitted fabric of the stockings, and avoid certain creams, ointments and oils that can ruin your stockings or leave stains. It’s also important to avoid sharp-edged rings, bracelets or watches, as well as sharp or cracked fingernails, when putting your MCS or taking them off.
Compression therapy is a common technique used to exert sustained pressure on the legs to improve blood flow and circulation in an effort to reduce symptoms like swelling, aches, pain and blood clots. Medical Compression Stockings (MCS) are elastic socks/stockings that apply this controlled pressure and come in many different pressure levels and styles.

Here we’ve debunked some of the most common myths about compression. Read on to learn more!

Myth #1: Compression socks are for old people!

We’ll start with the most popular belief – that compression stockings are solely meant for your grandparents. Wrong! Despite their archaic design from centuries ago and the lack of colors and styles up until more recent years, MCS have come a long way, not only in technology but in aesthetics and appearance – so much so, that they can blend right into your everyday wardrobe!

VENOSAN® offers compression garments in a variety of styles and colors to fit every person’s lifestyle. And for a more comfortable fit, we manufacture garments using double covered technology. A double covered design prevents bare elastic from touching the skin. Each elastic inlay yarn is wrapped twice with the fine yarns to cover it. This assists in easier donning, allowing the product to glide on and off. Double covered inlay yarns also provide increased comfort and durability, which lead to longer customer satisfaction and more consistent use.

Depending on the type of yarns used to knit MCS, these garments can also provide other benefits. Various special yarns provide odor control, wick moisture, prevent bacterial growth in the garment, provide hypoallergenic properties and/or a luxurious feel – all of which are definitely not exclusive to your grandparents!

Myth #2: Compression stockings are only for people with pre-existing health conditions.

When most people think of medical compression therapy, they associate it with the elderly and pre-existing health conditions like varicose/spider veins, lymphedema or another chronic venous disease. But in addition to today’s advanced technology and design, research has shown that compression can benefit a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds, ages, life stages and jobs.

Most careers these days involve either sitting or standing on your feet all day, both of which can lead to long term health effects like Chronic Venous Disease (CVD). Professions in healthcare, retail, factory work, teaching, hairstyling and general office work all put your body at an increased risk for blood clots, swelling and leg fatigue. In fact, workers standing for just 50% of their shift are at an increased risk for detrimental health effects.

In addition to work, spending long hours behind the wheel or seated in a plane during travel can also increase your risk for venous disease. Evidence suggests that you are much less likely to develop a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or other serious venous condition when wearing compression during long stretches of travel. Therefore, wearing MCS during long distance travel, combined with intermittent movement, can help travelers arrive at their destination both safely and comfortably.

Lastly, one more often overlooked area of compression is for pregnant women. While compression socks may not be necessary early on in a pregnancy, your body will naturally produce more fluid and blood to as your baby grows. This often leads to swelling in the feet and legs, one of the most common complaints of pregnant women. In fact, up to 80% of expecting moms experience swelling in the feet. This can be especially triggered if you’re on your feet all day or have other existing risk factors. Thankfully, MCS can combat some of that swelling and fluid buildup, improving circulation and relieving aches and pains.

Myth #3: Compression socks are too hot and are only suitable for colder months.

Many people don’t realize that hot weather can actually make venous disorders worse by weakening veins, which is why it’s important to wear your MCS consistently, even through the hotter months as needed. Luckily, if you’re bothered by the heat, VENOSAN® offers sheer, breathable and even sweat-wicking options like Athletic and CoolMax Comfort that can make your legs feel lighter, cooler and overall more comfortable.

To a new user, yes, compression stockings can be a bit tricky at first to master. This is because although they are similar in appearance to traditional stockings, they serve an entirely different purpose and thus, are a bit more complicated than first meets the eye. But with time and practice, MCS will become routine and easy to put on and take off. Today, new technology and functionality makes donning and doffing your MCS easier than ever.
Myth #5: Compression is dangerous.

Before starting compression therapy, you should always consult your medical professional to determine if it’s right for you. Proper fit, dosage and application are all crucial to the healthy effects the garments can provide. Before choosing the first compression sock you see, it’s important to do your research. There are different products specialized for different circumstances, like pregnancy, travel, casual wear, and medical conditions like varicose/spider veins, lymphedema, lipedema, more. Your doctor can recommend a product based on your unique needs.

Additionally, some people fear that compression will result in the loss of circulation – the exact opposite effect it’s intended to have! Once again, when used and sized properly, MCS are completely safe and can have great health benefits.

However, as with many health products, medical compression is not for everyone and can actually have adverse effects when used incorrectly or too much. If you have a fragile skin condition, open sores, severe peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease or any significant disease that can impede blood flow, it is usually not advised to engage in compression therapy.

The human vascular system is composed of three main parts: the arterial system, the venous system and the lymphatic system. While arteries carry oxygen to cells, veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the lungs and heart. Veins are elastic and unlike arteries, depend on one-way valves and muscle contractions to propel blood back toward the heart against the pull of gravity. Calf muscle contractions, such as when walking, are especially important in moving blood through the veins of the legs. This is called the “calf muscle pump.”

Here’s how it works:

In healthy veins, every time the calf muscle contracts, valves open and up to 70% of the blood in the legs is propelled in one direction back towards the heart. When the calf muscle relaxes, valves approximate, or tighten to close, and prevent blood from flowing backwards in the vein. This calf muscle pump, thus, ensures that the venous return back to the heart works properly. It’s crucial that in order for the calf muscle pump to function correctly, the calf muscles must be in use, such as when walking, running or exercising.

So what happens when there’s a lack of movement?

Long periods of standing or sitting can lead to high venous pressure and poor blood flow, also known as venous insufficiency. This results in damage to the veins and blood pooling in the legs. Water from the blood can then leak through vessel walls into surrounding tissues, causing swelling in the feet and legs that is common to many with poor circulation.

This is where medical compression therapy comes in. Medical Compression Stockings (MCS) are specialized hosiery designed to improve blood flow and help prevent venous disorders from occurring. MCS work in tandem with the calf muscle pump to improve circulation. This can limit more serious symptoms like skin discoloration, pain, infections and clots, and complications like Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Wearing MCS in combination with frequent movement, such as walking, hiking, climbing stairs, cycling and swimming, is an important step to ensuring the efficiency of the calf muscle pump and preventing venous disease.

Who can benefit from medical compression?

Contrary to popular belief, medical compression is not just for the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions. A wide variety of individuals can benefit from compression therapy, including pregnant women, frequent travelers, office workers, those who work on their feet all day, and anyone who lives a more sedentary lifestyle.

Some common medical conditions that may benefit from compression therapy include people who suffer from a clotting disorder, have a family history of DVT, have varicose/spider veins, lymphedema, lipedema, leg ulcers and more. Also, if you’ve had a recent surgery or have been on bed rest, compression therapy can help reduce swelling and risk of clots.

Even healthy individuals can benefit from compression! Both amateur and professional athletes can experience increased blood flow, boosted performance and a speedier recovery time with less muscle soreness through compression therapy both during and immediately after exercise. Furthermore, these positive effects can continue up to 72 hours post-workout.

Office workers, healthcare workers and other individuals who either stand or sit most of the day at work can also greatly benefit from compression. Prolonged sitting is a significant risk factor for CVD and blood clots. In fact, one of the most commonly identified risk factors for blood clots is seated immobility at work. Symptoms of CVD such as pain, swelling, leg fatigue, spider and varicose veins are also known to develop due to sitting/standing professions. In fact, it is reported that nearly 70% of healthcare workers are affected by one or more symptoms of CVD.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t use compression?

In short, yes. Medical compression is not for everyone and can actually have adverse effects when used incorrectly or too much. If you have a fragile skin condition, open sores, severe peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease or any significant disease that can impede blood flow, it is usually not advised to engage in compression therapy. We always advise consulting with your medical professional if you have any questions about compression therapy.

History of Silvers Benefits

The use of the element silver in our day to day lives dates back centuries. What usually comes to mind is silver in jewelry, coins, manufacturing and even utensils, like kitchen silverware. But did you know that silver actually has a huge niche in the health and wellness industry and offers an assortment of healing purposes?

Silver’s ancient history first took off in Turkey and Greece over 5,000 years ago. Silver would be mined and crafted by silversmiths into merchandise, like jewelry, coins and cups, to be sold at markets and traded with nearby countries. Eventually silver made its way around the world. At the same time silver was being used for production and manufacturing of household items, it was also being discovered as a health agent.

The natural healing powers of silver largely lie in its antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and its preventative medicinal use goes back to ancient times. The Greeks used silver vessels to keep water fresh, the Romans used silver urns to prevent wine from spoiling, pioneers coming to America kept silver coins in their drinking casks to prevent bacterial growth, the Chinese ate with silver chopsticks, silver was used to combat infections in war wounds – the list goes on.

But silver largely disappeared from the medicinal market in the 1900s, because it could not keep up with other modern medicines being discovered. However, silver’s benefits have not been long forgotten and today its properties remain a powerhouse in the use of natural healing.

Silver is known to kill even the toughest of germs and has been tested against over 650 bacteria, viruses and fungi. Silver has shown fighting ability against common infections like the flu, strep throat, pneumonia, staph, herpes and UTIs. It also promotes healing of skin wounds, cuts, burns, bug bites, warts, sores and boils, and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Silver can help with digestive issues, food poisoning, cholera and diarrhea. There are even accounts of silver aiding in killing cancer cells.

Perhaps the most incredible aspect of silver are its little to no known side effects. Another aspect that makes silver so special is that even when used regularly over time, it doesn’t result in an increased resistance in the body. Usually, when an individual uses antibiotics too often they can develop resistance or immunity to the drug. Not the case with silver – making it a great choice for long term use.

All that’s to say – silver is a highly valuable health component that can provide numerous benefits to individuals of all walks of life.

So what exactly is the science behind silver?

Silver has an electrical and thermal conductivity, meaning it’s able to create an electrical field that distributes heat and electricity around the body. Positively-charged silver ions generate a conductive field that pushes electromagnetic radiation away from the body. Doing this stimulates the body’s current conductivity, improving body temperature regulation, blood flow and overall healing. These positively ions also bind to negative oxygen receptors in germs like bacteria, weakening and causing them to die.

Now that you understand how silver works, how can you reap its benefits?

Although we often think wearing silver as jewelry, it can actually be worn in clothing and other garments! When worn directly on the skin, the silver properties of the garment can interact with your body’s natural conductivity and provide the many benefits listed above as well as serve as a shield against the germs we come into contact with everyday. Wearing silver regularly can also boost your immune system.

So where does compression come in?

At VENOSAN®, we offer specialized Medical Compression Stockings (MCS) infused with silver, to stimulate healing and infection prevention. Our Silverline for Men and Silverline for Women do just that. Designed with Ionic+® yarn, these stockings help eliminate odor caused by bacteria and fungus as well as offer antimicrobial benefits that withstand wash and wear.
